1. Program Description

Tether, LLC ("Tether," "we," "our," or "us") operates an SMS messaging program to support core features of the Tether mobile application. We send two types of SMS messages:

  • One-time verification codes (OTP): Short numeric codes sent to authenticate your identity during sign-in or when you update your phone number on your account. These are transactional messages required for account security.
  • Account security notices: Alerts sent to the phone number on your account when your phone number or email address is changed, so you can undo an unauthorized change. These are transactional security messages.

Tether does not send promotional or marketing SMS messages.

2. How You Opt In

2.1 Verification Codes

When you create a Tether account or update your phone number, you provide your mobile phone number and must explicitly consent to receive SMS one-time verification codes as part of the authentication process. The SMS consent checkbox is unchecked by default and appears with the program disclosures, SMS Terms, and Privacy Policy at the point of phone-number entry. Tether sends the verification code only after you select that checkbox. You must complete OTP verification to use phone-based authentication; a previously verified recovery email may provide a separate recovery path.

2.2 Account Security Notices

The same consent, given when you add or verify the phone number on your account, covers transactional security notices sent to that number. These are sent automatically, and only, when the phone number or email address on your account changes — whether you make that change yourself or Tether support makes it on your behalf at your request.

Because the purpose of these messages is to alert you to a change you may not have authorized, they are sent to the phone number on file at the time of the change. They are never used for promotion or marketing.

3. Message Frequency

Message frequency varies based on your account activity:

  • Verification codes are sent only when you initiate a sign-in or phone-number change. Most users receive one OTP per session.
  • Account security notices are sent only when the phone number or email address on your account changes. Most users receive none; a user who updates their contact details receives one message per change.

4. Costs

Message and data rates may apply. Standard carrier messaging rates apply to SMS messages sent and received. Tether does not charge any additional fee for SMS messages. Please check with your mobile carrier if you are unsure about your messaging plan.

5. How to Opt Out

You may opt out of Tether SMS messages at any time by replying STOP to any message you receive from us. After opting out:

  • You will receive a single confirmation message acknowledging your opt-out.
  • No further SMS messages will be sent to your number. STOP applies to every message type described in Section 1 — both verification codes and account security notices — not a subset.
  • Because Tether uses SMS verification codes to sign you in, opting out means you will no longer be able to sign in to Tether with that phone number, and you will no longer be alerted by SMS if someone changes the details on your account. If you previously verified a recovery email, you may still use the email recovery path.

To opt back in, reply START to the same number.
